The first blood of Season 7 in Game of Thrones was spilled by the bad uncle, Euron Greyjoy. He appears the best character to do so as he has a large agenda to achieve with just one fight. Euron seeks revenge, the throne of the Iron Islands, and the hand of Cersei Lannister that will prove obedient once he offers his gift. At the same time, Theon Greyjoy appeared on screens as a weak and cowardly leader. However, how far-fetched was his reaction to when uncle seized his sister in a deadly clutch after all?
Instead of a Cowardly Leader, Theon Loses His Mask and Shows the Real Face of a Victim of Torture
Once Episode 2 Stormborn was over, the Internet launched a mocking campaign against Theon’s escape. After all, minutes before Euron’s surprise visit, Theon was portrayed as Yara’s great protector. Despite this title, Theon chooses to jump into the dark waters instead of rescuing of his sister.
However, this demeanor wasn’t so surprising. After all, it has been just two years since Theon landed in the hands of his torturer, Ramsay Bolton. Therefore, the wounds of his flesh might have healed, yet his spirit is still corroded by horrifying excruciations in which Ramsay found pleasure. At one point, Theon cracked and was turned into a brainwashed zombie that answered by the name of “Reek.”
D.B. Weiss and David Benioff Found Theon to Be a More Complex Character than Others
Screenwriters D.B. Weiss and David Benioff themselves tackled the Theon topic with care. They did a great job taking a few episodes to develop a mask of peace for this controversial character. The Greyjoy heir did well managing a tensed moment in the season finale at the return of his uncle. However, in the middle of a battle where all the crew was suffering because of Euron’s wrath, Reek’s true personality resurfaced.
“And as we were writing it, we realized you don’t just get over what happened to him.”
The whole scene reminded the audience that Theon is not actually a cowardly leader. He is the victim of a terrifying experience that he tries to overcome in his own way. However, without an army of psychiatrists, as people have in our world, he doesn’t know the right way to do it. Therefore, he would rather jump off a boat to hold on to his remaining sanity. On top of that, Yara might have survived uncle’s fury and ended up as a hostage.
