The woman refused the nursery because some of the assistants were obese
A mother from Great Britain refused to let her daughter go to a nursery school with obese assistants, and received plenty of criticism for it. The women felt like she needed to explain herself, and said that people had become way too tolerant with fat positivity. This isn’t supposed to be offensive, but she is only thinking about the well-being of her daughter.
The toddler wasn’t enrolled at the nursery because of the obese assistants
Hilary Freeman was about to enroll her daughter at a nursery school in London, but she noticed how several of the assistants were obese. Therefore, she decided she should start looking for a different nursery. Her primary concern was the safety of her daughter.
She found one of the assistants morbidly obese, and she questions this woman’s ability to be quick enough to intervene in case toddlers put themselves in danger. Also, she is worried about what example might these people give to her daughter. Freeman wants to get her toddler used to healthy eating habits but, if she were to see these people having lunch in front of her, she might take a bad example and then ask her mom for unhealthy snacks.
Her comments received a huge backlash
Then, the woman added some controversial remarks. She claimed obese people are not attractive. On the contrary, they might give rise to feelings of disgust. The remarks which raised many debates stated that these feelings of disgust are not socially constructed, and are a natural response of our mind.
Freeman has been overweight herself because of some thyroid problems. However, with the help of medication, physical exercise, and a healthy diet, she managed to reach a normal weight. This is why she think these people should be helped and encouraged to lose weight.
As expected, her comments didn’t have the effect she desired. She received thousands of negative commentaries, and not even her bosses couldn’t stand indifferent, as she was fired from her job as a newspaper columnist. This convinced her to return to a second commentary, where she urged people not to stay indifferent to the obesity epidemic.
