CBP officials are set to begin testing eight different border wall prototypes.
Officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection are set to begin testing eight different prototypes for the border wall which Donald Trump promised to his supporters during the presidential campaign. However, the real question seems to be: what will happen after they decide?
According to CBP Division Chief Mario Villarreal, their people are paying close attention to what happens in Washington, but their mission is simply to protect the country. So they actually have no control over whether or not the federal government gives them the money needed to do so.
“What is happening in the Beltway, and with the funding, is beyond our control,” he said bluntly, giving an interview earlier this month at the agency’s San Diego headquarters.
No Mone Yet for the Border Wall
Department of Homeland Security reports point out that they need about $1.6 billion for the wall, money which administrators have asked for but not yet received.
President Donald Trump is an opponent of illegal immigration, and a central point of his campaign was building a wall across the entire border between the United States and Mexico. However, the concept has naturally proven controversial. Getting Congress to agree to fund it may, as such, prove difficult or even impossible.
The tests that the CBP are currently conducting will assess border wall matters such as durability and scalability, with the goal of deciding which prototype will best keep illegal immigrants out of the United States. More than one prototype may be selected, consider some.
However, whether or not this data will be put to good use is still up in the air. While the idea of raising a wall proved to be rather popular among some of his supporters, it is a hard sell even among Trump’s fellow Republican lawmakers.
The federal government offered the companies making the prototypes contracts of $300 million but later amended and declared that most of the money would only be given after the tests.
