Don’t get too excited about summer yet, because first you need to check out our summer safety tips on how to prevent skin cancer. Dermatologists warn that people are being diagnosed with skin cancer more often than ever. Alarming studies show that one in five people develop skin cancer nowadays.
Here’s how to prevent skin cancer efficiently and be stress-free:
- Avoid the Sun
If possible, don’t go out between 10 AM and 4 PM, when the sun is at its brightest. If not, try seeking shade at all times.
- Wear Sunscreen
Sunscreen is a must not only in the summer but in the winter as well. It works by absorbing, scattering, or reflecting sunlight. Sunscreens have a sun protection factor assigned to them. The higher the number, the better protection it provides. Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15.
Sunscreen is most effective is applied 30 minutes before going outside. After that, you must reapply it every two hours. If you’re out on the beach enjoying a good swim, you have to reapply sunscreen whenever you go in the water.
- Wear Sunglasses
Sunglasses are another way to protect yourself from UV rays. They are a perfect way through which you can protect the skin around your eyes from the damaging sun exposure. Wrap-around sunglasses are the most effective, as they block the UVA and UVB rays coming from the sides.
- Check Your Skin Constantly
Here’s how to prevent skin cancer by being your own doctor: check your skin. Basically, you have to look for new or changing moles, growths, bumps, freckles, and birthmarks. Even an existing mole that has changed in size or shape can be a triggering factor. Examine yourself carefully and see a doctor if you detect something suspicious.
- Cover Your Skin
We know it’s summer, and it’s too hot to walk around like an Eskimo, but you’ll have to cover yourself from time to time. If you know you’re going to be spending a great deal of time out in the sun, you’ll have to cover the skin. Invest in clothes made out of natural fiber to keep yourself protected.
- No More Tanning
Women love a nice tan, but it comes with a cost. Any tan, natural or artificial, is extremely damaging to the skin. And we’re not just talking about skin cancer; it may result in premature skin aging. So try to avoid sun tanning and tanning booths.
