The Congress is trying to cut the funding for the Planned Parenthood organization

The Trump administration teamed up with the Congress in an attempt to cut the funding for Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide abortions. Many see this as a narrowing of women’s rights and an assault on their health choices. However, some think that these two are not connected.

Shelley Gundrey is member of Lifeguard of La Plata County, which is an organization that opposes abortion and provides several family services. She thinks that the life of a child shouldn’t be regarded as a threat to a woman’s health.

Planned Parenthood agrees with Gundrey that it shouldn’t be a threat, but the hard truth is that it is. The government may try to limit the women’s access to abortion, but they will actually limit their access to health care. What they are trying to do is to make contraception illegal, and this would send us many years back in time.

Lifeguard comes with a response. They claim that women would still benefit from all the medical services they need, since they can provide everything that Planned Parenthood does, except abortions. However, they insist that reproductive care is a delicate field and some of the services involved are better performed by a specialist than by a general practitioner.

The organization offers all kinds of reproductive care. On one hand, there are the primary care services that are funded by federal money and, on the other hand, there are the special services, such as abortions, that are funded by donations.

Besides the plan to cut the funds for Planned Parenthood, other proposed bills may affect the services performed by the organization. One bill prohibits the termination of the life of an unborn child if it does not put the mother’s life in danger. If a physician performs an abortion that does not respect the conditions, he faces a class 1 felony charge. Also, the clinics should report how many procedures they undertake per year and inform women who are requiring chemically induced abortions how these can be reversed.

In the end, what all these bills are about is the banning of abortion and the taboo they are trying to apply to women who need such care. Even though it has moral implications, such laws reduce the women’s right and they may put their health in danger.
