Gabe Newell, the founder and CEO of Valve, has recently offered an interview in which he talked about the disinterest of the company in developing games for consoles and their choice to stick to PC. He said that they are not so happy about “working in closed gardens”.
In other words, Valve is not happy with the more closed-off system of consoles. Another source of dissatisfaction in the console industry is the apparent fear that revolves around free-to-play games. Newell stated that all those who did product planning for consoles were a bit reticent about free-to-play games, thing that worked as a deal breaker for Valve.
Moreover, Newell does not agree with the upgrade system for consoles. He gave the example of the Steam app for iOS when, immediately after the release, they received quite a big amount of feedback. They used this feedback to improve the app and they started creating the update the next day.
However, they could not release the update for six months, without even receiving an explanation on why the update is not available. Finally, after all these months, the update became available, again, without any explanation on why it has not been available until that moment.
Thus, Valve is not happy with the consoles because they work as an intermediary between them and their customers and, usually, do not do such a great job. They want to offer the best of improvements to their customers and the consoles do not allow this.
Valve has quite a history of games released for consoles. In 2007, they released The Orange Box for console, and then they moved on to both Left 4 Dead games, Portal 2, and even Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Afterwards, they slowly started abandoning console games and concentrated on bringing numerous improvements to the PC versions.
One of the best examples of such an improvement is Team Fortress 2, which evolved from a console game in 2007 to a more refined PC free-to-play shooter in 2017. Also, Left 4 Dead 2 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive received brand new mods and content that was not available for the console versions.
Unfortunately for console users, their favorite Valve games will no longer be available on their platform and they might need to switch to PC to play new games released by the company.
