Woman who underwent plastic surgery

American plastic surgeons warned that labiaplasties became more popular in the U.S.

A new report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows an unusual trend among the patients who require to have their bodies surgically altered. The number of labiaplasties increased in the last few years.

Women are struggling so hard to conform to the beauty standards of the society that they are ready to modify any bit in their body if they think it does not look as it should. Thus, the report shows that over 12,000 labiaplasties took place only in 2016. This is 39 percent more than in the previous year.

Debra Johnson, the president of ASPS, says that, now, when plastic surgery procedures are more and more common, people have started choosing more areas of the body that they want to modify. Also, patients are now more comfortable about discussing anything with their plastic surgeon and they do not feel embarrassed to choose the most uncommon of areas.

Some may think that it is good that people are now more open to discuss about their bodies. Actually, what they do is find more faults with their bodies. Labiaplasty is the process during which the surgeon removes some parts of the labia minora. Some women choose to have such a surgery because of the physical discomfort, but most of the times it is barely a cosmetic process.

In 2015, reports show that 9,138 labiaplasties were performed in the United States. Surgeons reported 12,666 for 2016. However, we cannot say that labiaplasty became popular only recently, since the tracking of the technique only started in 2015.

What should be regarded as worrying is the fact that this trend became increasingly popular among teen girls. Thus, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists proposed some guidelines for physicians that were meant to explain to these young women that labias could not look the same on all women.

Plastic surgeons blame this trend on pornography and pubic grooming. Now that women adopted the trend of shaving or waxing completely, it is easier for them to see how they look like and develop some complexes.

Also, the internet is there for everybody and they are one search away from finding other people that think they might have a problem. This is how they decide they have to change something at their bodies.

Labiaplasty is quite an unnecessary process. There should be no beauty standard for labias and women should learn that they do not have a problem if they look a little different from others.
